{"id":2073,"date":"2018-01-30T13:52:01","date_gmt":"2018-01-30T13:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fpgonline.co.uk\/?p=2073"},"modified":"2023-09-19T10:46:47","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T10:46:47","slug":"bitcoin-scams-warnings-crypto-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fpgonline.co.uk\/index.php\/bitcoin-scams-warnings-crypto-investment\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin Scams \u2013 Further Warnings Over Crypto Investment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p>The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has issued further warnings about the growing threat of online investment scams \u2013 in particular the emergence of fraudsters offering investments in Cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Ripple, Ethereum and Litecoin via social media.<\/p>\n<p>The FCA have urged caution and vigilance by those tempted by online claims of (unrealistically) high investment returns from crypto investment or binary options, contracts for difference (CFDs) and forex.<\/p>\n<p>Binary options, which allow investors to make bets on the expected value or price of a stock, commodity, currency or index, became a regulated investment product on 3 January, meaning all firms trading in binary options will need to be authorised by the FCA.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the FCA has published a list of 94 firms without FCA authorisation that it understands to be offering binary options trading to UK consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Last year investors lost \u00a387,410 per day to binary options scams, with those aged under 25 six now times (13%) more likely to trust an investment offer they received via social media than over 55s (2%).<\/p>\n<p>Mark Steward, director of enforcement, FCA, said: &#8220;As people have become more sceptical of investment-related cold calls and consumer habits have changed, we have seen investment fraud moving online and to social media. While their websites and profiles appear to be professional, they are all too often run by fraudsters who fix prices and pay-outs, or in some instances don&#8217;t really place trades at all, before disappearing with innocent investors&#8217; money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alan Clifton, founding Partner at The Financial Planning Group, commenting on the pitfalls of Crypto Investment, said; \u201cIt is important to remember that none of us should invest in anything we don\u2019t fully understand \u2013 and if the financial returns on investment seem too good to be true \u2013 then they probably are just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the past 25 years, The Financial Planning Group have helped individuals, families and businesses to place their financial affairs in context with their future goals and aspirations.
